Delstar is a small village in the northern state of Burgenn, Austria, not far from Bratisra, Slovakia, where only 800 people live in the production and logistics center of Coca-Cola HBC Austria. The factory, formerly Romerquelle Mineral Water Factory, was founded in the 1940s and transformed into an industrial bottling plant in the 1960s. After being acquired by Coca-Cola bottlers in 2003, it gradually expanded and accelerated its modernization, replacing Coca-Cola's factories in Vienna, Austria and Slovakia.
Since 2013, almost all soft drinks for the Austrian market have been produced here and distributed across the country. At present, there are 11 production lines, including production lines for mineral water, sensitive drinks, soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit juice, etc., suitable for PET bottles, glass bottles, bags and other containers. The first canning production line commissioned by KHS in 2019 which is a new milestone since the establishment of the plant.
Among the many challenges, the most difficult is to complete the commissioning and installation of the production line within a pressing time. The execution preparation of the project is extremely tedious and the whole factory needs to be replanned, not only to empty the warehouse for raw materials to install new lines, but also to relocate new space for the tensile bottle blowing equipment and palletizing equipment after the space occupied by the production line. This is just like a chain reaction of "affecting the whole body" which requires comprehensive planning.
Before the new can filling line is delivered, the old warehouses must be renovated, paved with new floors, replacement pipes, rewiring and the ventilation and lighting systems installed. However, during this period, another complex situation emerged: the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak hit Europe and spread to Austria, working in isolation. Despite the poor external situation and the high uncertainty surrounding the outbreak, the Edelstar plant and KHS team never considered a delay. The plant completed all production line installations by the specified date and the KHS team completed commissioning on time.
Compared with the factory production line, the new canning production line can quickly reach a large capacity, even running at twice the speed of the original production line. Moreover, the new can production line uses the KeelClip™ cardboard solution and the innovative secondary packaging can reduce the amount of plastic which is in line with the sustainable development strategy of Coca-Cola HBC Group.
